San Francisco

There have been many parallels drawn between San Francisco and Sydney - both on a harbour, both with famous bridges spanning the city suburbs and great sea food. One of the symbols associated with the city are the cable cars (photo LEFT) - the US's only moving national historic landmark. This Powell St cable car travels along one of the city's steepest streets leading down to the bay. Lombard St(photo BOTTOM LEFT) is famous for being the "crookedest street in the world". Cars crawl through the hairpin bends which are also on a steep decline. Quite an experience driving down this street!
One of places that I am totally fascinated by, have flown over, and sailed by - but not yet visited (as we missed the last ferry) is Alcatraz (see first two thumbnails). In 1907 the island was designated as a prison. From 1934 to 1963 it served as a federal prison for the most dangerous prisoners. One of its most famous inmates was Al Capone. Alcatraz will be my first stop next vist to San Francisco!
