Martha's Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard was one of the first places that I wanted to see after moving to New England. So one weekend during the summer we took the boat from Falmouth Harbor, MA to Oaks Bluffs - the first port of call on the Vineyard. It takes 35 minutes to sail across the waters of the Vineyard Sound. One of the first things to see are the GingerBread Houses. In 1835 the Methodist church held its first religious camp meeting at Oak Bluffs. In 1835 there were 9 tents pitched, and by 1869 over 500 tents were erected for the meetings. Between 1862-1880 they began to build permanent structures - resulting in the Gingerbread houses. photo LEFT
Cycling is a popular form of transport. We cycled from Oaks Bluffs to Edgartown - 7 miles away. Today, much of the town has been preserved as it was 100 years ago, with is narrow lanes, captains homes with manicured lawns and white picket fences. Combine all this is great little eateries, and shopping and you have the perfect place to spend a weekend. I am looking forward to spending more time on the Vineyard!
